Yahoo! Inc. is an American multinational Internet corporation headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.

According to news sources, roughly 700 million people visit Yahoo websites every month. Yahoo itself claims it attracts “more than half a billion consumers every month in more than 30 languages.”

It is globally known for its Web portal, search engine Yahoo Search, and related services, including Yahoo Directory, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Groups, Yahoo Answers, advertising, online mapping, video sharing, fantasy sports and its social media website.

Yahoo Answers

Yahoo Answers was formerly known as Yahoo Q & A, is a community-driven question-and-answer (Q&A) site or a knowledge market launched by Yahoo! on June 28, 2005 that allows users to both submit questions to be answered and answer questions asked by other users. Yahoo! Answers is available in 12 languages, but several Asian sites operate a different platform which allows for non-Latin characters.

Yahoo! Answers allows any questions that do not violate Yahoo! Answers community guidelines. To encourage good answers, helpful participants are occasionally featured on the Yahoo! Answers Blog. Though the service itself is free, the contents of the answers are owned by the respective users – while Yahoo! maintains a non-exclusive royalty-free worldwide right to publish the information. Chat is explicitly forbidden in the Community Guidelines, although categories like Politics and Religion & Spirituality are mostly opinion. Users may also choose to reveal their Yahoo! Messenger ID on their Answers profile page.

Misuse of Yahoo! Answers is handled by a user moderation system, where users report posts that are in breach of guidelines or the Terms of Service. Posts are removed if they receive sufficient weight of trusted reports (reports from users with a reliable reporting history). Deletion may be appealed: an unsuccessful appeal receives a 10-point penalty; a successful one reinstates the post and reduces the ‘trust rating’ (reporting power) of the reporter. If a user receives a large number of violations in a relatively short amount of time or a very serious violation, it can cause the abuser’s account to be suspended. In extreme, but rare cases (for a Terms of Service violation), the abuser’s entire Yahoo! ID will be suddenly deactivated without warning.

Yahoo Mail

Yahoo Mail is a free email service (except for Yahoo! Mail Business Email Plans) offered by the American company Yahoo! It was launched in 1997, and, according to comScore, Yahoo Mail was the third-largest web-based email service with 281 million users as of December 2011.

As many as three web interfaces were available at any given date. The traditional “Yahoo Mail Classic” preserved the availability of their original 1997 interface until July 2013 in North America. A 2005 version included a new Ajax interface, drag-and-drop, improved search, keyboard shortcuts, address auto-completion and tabs. However other features were removed, such as column widths and one click delete-move-to-next. In October 2010, Yahoo released a beta version of Yahoo Mail that included improvements to performance, search and Facebook integration. In May 2011 it became the default interface. Their current Webmail interface was introduced during 2012. Yahoo Mail had unlimited storage from March 27, 2007 until October 8th, 2013. The new design introduced to users from October 2013 was met with heavy criticism of its layout and user ability. Yahoo Mail suffered a major outage where some users could not access their email messages beginning December 10, 2013 until December 12th, 2013, when the outage was fully resolved.

Yahoo Directory

The Yahoo! Directory is another services which Yahoo own. Its a web directory which at one time rivaled DMOZ in size. The directory was Yahoo!’s first offering. When Yahoo! changed to crawler-based listings for its main results in October 2002, the human-edited directory’s significance dropped, but it was still being updated as of April 16, 2014. Users could browse thousands of listings which were organized in 7 or more tiers.

Yahoo Messenger (Social media)

Yahoo Messenger is an advertisement-supported instant messaging client and associated protocol provided by Yahoo. Yahoo Messenger is provided free of charge and can be downloaded and used with a generic “Yahoo ID” which also allows access to other Yahoo services, such as Yahoo Mail, where users can be automatically notified when they receive new email. Yahoo also offers PC-PC, PC-Phone and Phone-to-PC service, file transfers, webcam hosting, text messaging service, and chat rooms in various categories.

Yahoo Messenger was originally launched under the name Yahoo Pager on March 9, 1998.

In addition to instant messaging features similar to those offered by ICQ, it also offers (on Microsoft Windows) features such as: IMVironments (customizing the look of Instant Message windows, some of which include authorized themes of famous cartoons such as Garfield or Dilbert), address-book integration and Custom Status Messages. It was also the first major IM client to feature BUZZing and music-status. Another recently added feature is customized avatars.

Yahoo Finance

Yahoo Finance provides financial information and commentary with a focus on US markets. The web site offers information such as stock quotes, stock exchange rates, corporate press releases and financial reports, original programming video clips, and message boards. It also offers some online tools for personal finance management. Yahoo! Finance Worldwide offers similar features for international finance markets.
